The bicycle is an ideal vehicle for the Vineyard. Most of our roads are level and the scenery makes the ride that much easier. There are many miles of paved bike paths in the State Forest, laid out to help the traveler between Vineyard Haven, Oak Bluffs, Edgartown, and West Tisbury. There are also separate, protected, paved bike paths from Oak Bluffs to Edgartown, Vineyard Haven to Edgartown, and Edgartown to South Beach.
Bicycle Safety Bicycle safety on the Island is a major concern, particularly during our busy summer season. It is necessary for bicyclists to use good judgment and obey the laws.
Bicycle Operation Bicycles shall ride with traffic on the right and in single file.
Bicyclists or passengers must ride upon a permanent seat or baby seat.
Bicycles may not be towed, except for bicycle trailers.
Bicyclists may not carry bundles except in a basket or rack.
Bicyclists must keep at least one hand on the handlebar.
Bicycles must have an appropriate braking system.
Walk your bike when crossing the street and use crosswalks when available.
Nighttime Operation Nighttime is between 1/2 hour after sunset to 1/2 hour before sunrise.
Bicycles must display a lamp facing to the front and a lamp or reflector facing to the rear.
Reflectors must be on each pedal or around each ankle of the operator.
Wear reflective gear or lightly colored clothing.
Children Children under one year SHALL NOT be transported on a bicycle.
Children under thirteen years must wear approved helmets.
Children should possess safe riding skills and understand the precautions.
Parking Do not park bicycles on sidewalks.
Bicycle racks are provided in each town for your convenience. Please make an attempt to locate and to use them.
Lock your bicycle when unattended.
Do not chain your bike to a sign post or fence.
